Alverstone
Village Hall
Alverstone has a village hall which is used for a number of
clubs and activities.
The building was built in 1879 by Lord Alverstone and was
opened as a school 1879. The school was closed in 1921 and for a short time the
building was used as a Church. After the school closed the 26
pupils of Alverstone had to take the train from Alverstone station to Newchurch
to go to school.
Because Alverstone school had been closed the fares on the
train to New
church
was paid for by the Education Authority, but the children had to walk home
unless it was pouring with rain then the Headmaster of Newchurch School, Mr
Millett, would let the children out early so that they could catch the train to
Alverstone. In the 1930,s the Southern Railway put on each afternoon, during
term time, a special corridor-coach train to accommodate all the Alverstone
children. The children had to be let out of school early in order to catch the
special train.
There was only one room at the school into which was packed
the different classes with different teachers.

There are a number of clubs which meet in the hall, these
