Alverstone
Station and Railway line
Alverstone was on the railway line from Sandown via Newchurch and Horringford
to Newport. The railway was closed down in1956.
Here is a group of photographs showing the station and the railway.
The picture on the right shows a train just drawing into the station, it
is heading in the direction of Newchurch.
For
many years the station at Alverstone had a lady "station master".
The station
is now a private house as can be seen from the photograph on the left. The
station is alongside the river Yar that feeds the Mill pond. The adjacent road
goes from Adgestone to Borthwood and then along to Apse heath.
This is another picture of the former station showing the old railway track
which is now a cycle way and Path.

Don't forget to click
on the images if you wish to see them clearly.
