January 2008

The January monthly meeting was well attended by members of the public. The Chairman raised the issue of the Education Options currently being debated, explaining that only Option 3 seemed to ensure the future of Newchurch School. It was decided to include this issue as an Agenda item at the next monthly meeting.

During Councillors’ Reports the meeting was advised of a scheme launched by British Gas to provide free insulation in domestic properties for senior citizens. Any reader interested is encouraged to contact British Gas direct for further details. Concern was raised about the positions chosen for the installation of reactive speed signs along Winford Road / High Street / The Shute and the IWC is to be appraised of the Council’s view.

The Vice-Chairman (Mrs T Draper) reported on the success of the draft  Parish Plan launch day. The Chairman expressed a vote of thanks to the Parish Plan Steering Committee for its perseverance and all its hard work in the production of the Plan. The Council resolved to adopt the Parish Plan.

Two Planning Applications were considered. The applicant and several objectors spoke on one (for a new dwelling on land at ‘The Lodge’, Alverstone) and the meeting learned that around 18 letters of objection had been received relating to it. The Council resolved to object to the Application.

The Council was frustrated to learn that, despite being advised in good time of the date of the Parish Council’s meeting, no response had been received from Highways regarding safety issues on the Downs Road. It was agreed that the Council should continue to pursue this vigorously as a matter of urgency

The Monthly Meetings of the Parish Council are normally held in Newchurch Parish Hall on the third Monday of each month starting at 7.30pm: the date of the next Monthly Meeting is 18th February 2008..
