The Newchurch Ladies Choir was formed in October 1962 as a WI choir with Mrs. Jewson as the leader and Mrs. Jack Groves as the pianist. The practices were initially held in the Pointer Inn, Newchurch.

In 1965 Mrs. Jewson left the island and Mrs. Maisie Goodchild took over as leader and is still the Choir Mistress today. Under Maisie’s baton the choir has entered the Isle of Wight Music Festival and in 1992, with the help of Mr. Bassett Stevens, they won the Cup. The W.I. also ran an annual non-competitive Music Festival which the choir entered regularly with great success.

Over the years there have been a number of pianists working with the choir including Maisie Dyce, Mabel Groves, Elizabeth Bawden, Bassett Stevens, Vera Jones and Sybil Millard. The present pianist is Janet Colenutt with Beryl Millband (an alto in the choir) as deputy.

The Choir now has over 20 members and entertains all over the island at concerts, for charities and at our local churches. Every year the Choir raises money for a variety of charities, both national and Island based. Sometimes The Ladies Choir combines with the Newchurch Mens Choir to present a massed choir singing in four parts.

The Ladies Choir sings for pleasure and everyone enjoys their meetings.

If you would like to join the Ladies Choir or find out a little more about their activities please send an email via the address on the home page.

The choir meets in Newchurch Parish Hall on Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm
