February 07An extra meeting of the Council was held on Thursday 1st
February to discuss four Planning Applications, three of which related to
proposed development at Sandown Airport. The Chairman permitted comments from
the members of the public present at the meeting on the three airport
Applications and, after considerable discussion, the Council resolved
unanimously to object strongly to all three Applications.
In response to an invitation by Highways, the Council nominated Winford
Road/High Street, Alverstone Road and Canteen Road as suitable for inclusion in
a speed monitoring campaign. Before the start of the Monthly Meeting held on Monday 19th
February, Ian Boyd of Island 2000 Trust gave a fascinating presentation, that
included numerous slides, of the archaeology discovered at Alverstone in 2005. During the meeting the Council was informed by the Chairman
of the Parish Plan Steering Group that the questionnaire was very nearly ready
for distribution, which would be done by hand, and that incentives were on offer
to encourage parishioners to return their completed form. A report was received
from the Parish Hall committee which resulted in the Council deciding to
redecorate the kitchen area and to consider further redecoration and general
“sprucing-up” of the main hall. Members were pleased to learn that a notice placed in the
County Press had resulted in three enquiries from parishioners interested in
being co-opted to the Council. Two of the enquirers had recently confirmed their
willingness to fill the Casual Vacancies and the members decided to invite both
to join the Council. Six Planning Applications were considered to which it was agreed to make no objection.
