May 2005

The meeting held on Monday 16th May was the last monthly meeting of the current Parish Council.

The Chairman thanked existing members of the Council, and Mr Colin Richards who had been the County Councillor, for all their contributions to the life of the Parish. He also welcomed the recently elected County Councillor Mr Brian Mosdell who outlined a variety of changes that the new Isle of Wight Council (IWC) was implementing. Mr Mosdell also emphasised the importance that the new IWC would be placing on the role of Parish Councils.

The meeting considered a total of six Planning Applications. It was resolved to make no objection to four of the Applications, although concern was expressed about vehicular access at a proposed development in The Shute, Newchurch. Objections were, however, formally raised to a proposal for a garage closer to the road than the current front elevation at a property in Ventnor Road, Apse Heath, and to the arrangements for disposal of foul water in connection with equestrian development at the rear of the same property.

A proposal to divert a public footpath to the south of Rose Cottage, Holliers Farm was considered. It was agreed to support the proposal on the condition that no hedges should be removed as a result of the change.

The meeting resolved to postpone the allocation of donations to charities until the June meeting.

Now that “Newchurch Ward” at St.Mary’s hospital is functioning (although the official opening will not be until the autumn), it was agreed to invite Mr Richard Knowles to provide an update on how organisations may be able to contribute to establishing the link between the ward and the Parish.

The first meeting of the new Parish Council, which will also be the Annual Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday 13th June 2005.
