Activities held at Watery LaneNEWCHURCH PARISH SPORTS AND COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION. Over the past few years, the Association has a record of achievement for the benefit of the parish. It was the prime mover in the construction of the Community Centre, and has been responsible for the splendid parish recreation ground and pavilion in Watery Lane. The Association organises the Garlic Festival, from which most of its funds are obtained. VECTIS ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY. Although an all-Island society, it is strongly represented in the parish and the largest telescope in the Island is installed at the Parish Sports Ground in Watery Lane. Monthly meetings of the Society are held on the 4th Friday of each month (except Dec) at the Parish Church Centre, Town Lane, Newport at 7.30pm. The group has mainland lecturers covering many astro related subjects. Meetings are also held on the 2nd Friday of each month at the Observatory, Watery Lane, Newchurch. These are for practical work. Group visits to the Observatory can be arranged through the Director. Astronomy courses are also held at the Observatory for groups including High School groups. NEWCHURCH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. Formed in 1902, it is the oldest parish society. Summer and Autumn shows are held in the Community Centre with a wide range of classes, not only for flowers, fruit, and vegetables, but also for cookery, floral art, and handicrafts, and photography. During the winter, meetings are held in the Parish Hall on the second Monday of each month with a programme of talks, slide shows, any questions sessions, and competitions. Contact Mrs J Meek
