Newchurch Shops

There has been a village shop at Newchurch for many years. There used to be a Post office and a tea-room at the top of the Shute as the postcards below show us.

chtreelge6.JPG (12732 bytes)  In this card from the first half of the last century there is a sign for a tea shop next door to the Pointers Inn.

These cards below show the Post office at the top of the Shute.

Note the installation of a telephone box outside the Post Office. First of all it was a cream one then a new style red box was erected. The postcard with the red telephone box dates from around 1960.

The four cards above show the shop further down the High Street away from the Shute. This is the present day Post Office. The first coloured card shows a sign for the Post Office.

The first card (no electric wires) predates the cards with the phone boxes above.

Note the beautiful Wisteria - the oldest Wisteria on the Island.

A black and white postcard was produced to mark the finding of the Baker's oven.
