All Saints' Church Newchurch

All Saints' Church stands proudly at the top of the Shute in Newchurch.

bullet It can be seen from miles around and it is obvious why this particular site was picked by William Fitz-Osbourne, over 900 years ago, for the building of a church.

bullet After the defeat of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror gave Newchurch , and other land on the Isle of Wight to his greatest friend, William Fitz-Osbourne. He probably drew up the plans five churches on the Island. It is doubtful whether Fitz-Osbourne lived to see the foundation of the Church at Newchurch. He died in 1070 having already granted the tithes of Newchurch to Abbey of Lyra in Normandy. It was probably the monks of Normandy who, after Fitz-Osbourne's heir had been found guilt of treason and his lands forfeit to the crown, built the church, said to date from 1087.

bullet One wall remains from this church, the north wall of the chancel, pierced by three lancet windows.
