The
Mill
Alverstone Mill in the 1930s was quite a busy place.
There used to also be a
village shop in the Mill House. Alongside the house there was a beautiful
putting green which led down to the tea gardens.
The Mill was used to grind barley into flour and two yellow lorries carried
the flour to different parts of the island.
The gardens were a beautiful place to have afternoon tea and watch the rowing
boats on the river.
There was a small bridge over the sluice gates where you
could watch the water rushing through when the gates were open.
The
pond and the gates are still there today though the Mill and the Mill house are
now a private house.
The millstream in the 1930,s was a beautiful spot with an
abundance of wild flowers along the bank; fish in the stream: and many birds
including moorhens and swans. The steam was always kept dredged and free running
though unfortunately this is not always true today. Though it is still a
beautiful place and a lovely walk along the stream.
