The
Post Office
Unfortunately 2004 heralded the closure of the shop and the Post Office. This
is a real shame for the village. A Post office has been opened in the Parish
Hall - twice a week. There has
been a Post Office in the village for a long time although it used to be in a
shop at the top of the Shute. That building was demolished a number of years
ago.
Visit the Shops Postcard section to view the Shops, past and
present.
The former Post Office today was in the shop in the middle of the village which used
to be called Wisteria Store. The store has a the oldest Wisteria plant on the
Isle of Wight growing along the front. It was planted in 1887 by Mr J Wheeler.
In May the Wisteria is an unbelievable sight.
Recently the remains of a bakery were found inside the
building (and an abattoir floor in the garden nearby!). the end of the building
was once the workshop of the village shoe repairer.
Clematis Stores was the centre of the Victorian tradition of
Shroving on Shrove Tuesday. This was an annual event when the children from the
local school visited the village shop, the vicarage and one or two of the larger
houses and scrambled for
sweets and pennies.
The ritual ceased in 1914 but was revived in 1995 by the
present owners.
