Newchurch
Twinned with Villainville
The
Parish of Newchurch twinned with the village of Villainville,
Normandy in 1991.
Every
year in May there is a visit across the Channel with either our French friends
visiting Newchurch or a group from the Island travelling
to Normandy.
The
visits usually last at least 4 days with excursions and celebrations being
arranged by the host village.
Villainville
is a small village about 7 miles from the port of Le Havre. It is a farming area
with a very strong community spirit - just like Newchurch. The building on the
right is the Marie (the town hall) which doubles up as the local school

and
the picture on the left is the local church.
Whilst
in Villainville we have visited Rouen, Honfleur and Etretat; we have also had
fun at a waterpark: played lotto; ridden on a dotto train and explored the back
roads of Normandy on a car rally. We have also been entertained with delicious
food and wine and excellent company.
Some
of the interesting places we have visited.
Our
spoken French may not have improved a great deal but our love of French food and
wine is always thoroughly satisfied.

When
our French friends have visited Newchurch we have organised visits around the
island; a visit to the Navel docks at Portsmouth; grand meals for the host
families and the visitors; Bar-B-Qs; barn dances; Jazz evenings; petanque and
croquet evenings and visits to a typical English pub.

The
Twinning Association also holds social events during the year to boost our funds
and to have fun. These have included a Beaujolis evening; Bar-B-Qs; Quizzes;
Games evenings, Pentanque and Croquet evenings; Christmas parties and many
others.

Many
good friendships have developed over the years across the water, between adults
and children and we hope that more people will take advantage of this wonderful
opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.
